Once again, you MUST put the cumulative yardage on your post at the BOTTOM. If you don’t do this, we won’t enter you for prizes since we have a LOT of entrants and don’t have the time to add everything up for you.

Announcements:
* Quaere contest: what is your favorite Quaere colorway? Visit quaere.etsy.com or her Ravelry yarnie page to see all of them! You have until Feb 26 at midnight ET to enter, and the usual contest rules apply.
* Dana is having a KAL for a new pattern release! Karalee Harding (KSH Designs) has designed a beautiful cowl pattern for Dana’s Birth of Venus colorway (2CG Club Feb 2013), in both fingering and DK weight. Both versions only take one skein, so this is the perfect quick-knit project! Dana has Birth of Venus available in her shop for preorder on Journey Sock ($24), Touring DK ($24) (all plus shipping) so that you can make the cowl in the shown yarn, and it will also be offered on Luxe Sock ($29) for those of you who love cashmere bases. There will be a limit of 40 skeins of each type available, so when the preorders are sold out, it won’t be offered again as a custom order for a while; all preorders will end on March 1 regardless of whether all available skeins have sold. Please check out the shop listings at unwindyarncompany.com for all details on the preorders. The KAL will be hosted in Dana’s Unwind Yarn Company group on Ravelry. The pattern is available for purchase here. Karalee and Dana hope you’ll join them for this KAL!
* Dana and Susan Claudino have collaborated to bring you the Bonnie Wee Mouse pattern! This pattern features Dana’s Touring DK in “Bonnie Wee Thing”, a brand new colorway! You can place a custom order for the yarn by filling out the form here.
* Dana is not vending SAFF.
* We’re going to Camp Pluckyfluff in Asheville March 22-23!

Dana:
Knitting:
* Finish the following WIPs: Wanda Nell, Honeymoon Socks, Campus Jacket, Neely O’Hara, Chickadee Love Mittens, Wildflower Monkeys, Ka’ana (finished Honeymoon Socks only- so FAIL)
* knit at least 14000yds in 2013 (will hit 20,000 by the end of the month- WIN!)
* knit at least 3 more sweaters in 2013, at least (right now I’m leaning toward the Bailey Cardigan for the SSK #2 KAL, Less Is More by Amy King out of handspun, and I’m going to get back to the Rocky Coast Cardigan) (knit Old Man & The Sea & Every Last Yard. will hopefully finish Lady Marple shortly)<
* finish the “Brown Bagging It” KAL- at least 6 months’ worth, and bonus points if I accomplish more! (only finished 2 months worth. boo)

Spinning:
* spin at least 16oz a month… preferably 20oz… for a total of 12lb for the year (hopefully 15lb!). (total 206oz/12.875lb for year so far, avg per month = 17.17oz- met smaller goal!)
* no buying fiber until KY! (clubs aren’t included, and I’m in 2) (OOPS)
* try the following techniques: unsupported long draw, more art yarn techiques from Spin Art like corespinning (I already know how but need to get better!) and autowrapping. (didn’t get around to art yarns but definitely got better at long draw!)
* spin for at least 2 sweaters. (spun for one, the Nestlets.)

Shop Goals:
* introduce 2 more yarn bases (introduced worsted in June. working on a bulky for 2014)
* introduce 3 more fiber bases (Introduced Gray Merino, Superwash BFL, Panda, and Superwash BFL/Nylon)
* try to stay ahead on my shop updates instead of having to get them ready right before they go live (did great on this!)
* make a color cards page on my blog so I can have all of my repeatable colorways in one location (did it for yarn!)
* come up with at least 3 new colorways a month (did way more than that)
* stay ahead of holiday colorways by at least 2 months (meh I didn’t do so hot on this but that’s ok. I’m not a big holiday-yarn dyer in general.)

Brittany:
* Coldsheep until KY fiber festival in May. Yes, 5 months with no yarn buying! Then, cold sheep again until SSK. (I think this was mostly successful)
* Finish my WIPS. No, really this time. Stop laughing. (50% ain’t bad)
* Knit more than I did in 2012 (5732 yds) (woohoo! currently at 6596 yards!)
* Knit at least 2 sweaters (check!)
* Focus on one skein projects that aren’t socks (sort of…not really.)

Announcements:
* Giveaway for FibroFibers: Recommend some patterns you think would be great to use with Nightfall yarns. (be specific!) The winner will be drawn by RNG and will win a shawl ball of Nightfall in your choice of base and colorway. The usual rules apply. You have until midnight ET on 12/28 to enter.
* Drawing for the Alpaca Farm Boy Calendar: we had 24 entrants, and the RNG picked #16 Fromage! Contact Dana and she’ll get your calendar out to you ASAP!
* Clean Slate Challenge:
- We are having a Knitdown and Spindown from your stash and WIPs!
- The only hard and fast rule is that it has to be stash yarn or fiber that is at least 3 months old.
- Every 1500yds you knit down or spin out of fiber from stash equals one entry into a drawing for a prize.
- WIPs count, but the yarn used has to meet the 3-months-old criteria.
- We will have a thread for you to “claim your place” starting January 1, and a chatter thread where all chatter about the CSC should go. You will have one post in the FO thread and will be responsible for updating it with every item or yarn you finish. We will not be policing your entries, but ask that you please be honest. :)
- The Challenge will run from January 1- February 28, drawing will be done on the mid-March episode of the podcast.
- You can double dip with other podcast KAL/SALs AND with the Ravellynic Games.
- Please tag your projects or yarns with CSC2014
* We have had a few dropouts for the retreat so there are some spots available. At this point we have passed the deadline for the deposit, so any future signups will have to pay the entire amount up front. For a current number of available spots, please check out this thread in the group on Ravelry.

Into The Wool News/Announcements:
The retreat is almost full! We have 17 spots left as of recording, so if you’re on the fence you might want to go ahead and make a decision. We also want to go over a few things with you that have come up a lot since we announced the signups.
* The comment we made about not holding a spot without payment was not intended for those who were signing up prior to Dec 15 and paying their deposit. We do have to have your deposit by December 15 or your spot will be given to someone else. BUT, if you sign up prior to that and are waiting on the mail to deliver us your check, we aren’t going to give your spot away in the amount of time it takes for your check to get here. We just didn’t want someone signing up just to hold a spot in case they decide to come, and NEVER paying their deposit.
* If you have questions for us, please either ask them in the FAQ thread or email us through the retreat email, intothewoolfiberretreat@gmail.com. (this includes inquiries about the address to send the check, roommate assignments, and questions about the camp/activites we have planned) We ask that you please not send us Ravelry PMs about this retreat. All three of us are really busy, and Ravelry PMs tend to slip through the cracks. Whereas, if you email us, we all three have access to the email account (unlike Rav PMs which only go to one person) and you stand a much better chance of getting a timely response via email. Thank you for understanding this!!
* There are several threads that have been started that involve carpooling, airport pickups by people who are passing by, etc. and we highly encourage those of you that are travelling in via airplane or from a distance by car to take advantage of this opportunity. You can save a little money this way! (and our vendor market is going to be AWESOME so you’ll need it!)
* Please feel free to start some “getting to know you” threads on the group, and participate in the ones that are already there! We love to see you guys interacting and getting to know each other before the retreat.
* Got an idea for a KAL? We’d love to hear it!

Discussion: Homeward Bound: Why Women Are Embracing the New Domesticity by Emily Matchar ($11.89 Kindle, $18.09 Hardcover)
- the idea of domesticity as an antidote to anxiety and relying too much on a consumerist culture (“New Domesticity is the re-embrace of home and hearth by those who have the means to reject these things.”  “Some see themselves as part of what historians and sociologists are calling the “reskilling movement”- which is aimed at restoring prestige to historically devalued traditional arts and skills.”)
- resurgence of domesticity in the late 1990s with the Riot Grrrrl movement in the Pacific Northwest- became a social statement for younger women (and men!) to do handwork
- how blogging contributed to the rise of domesticity (pictures say it all), and how Ravelry led to the death of the knitting blog
- goes in-depth about Etsy and how it changed the nature of selling handmade goods online (has created an unsustainable bubble in the craft world- hobbyists vs. businesspeople who are trying to make a living)
- urge to make something- “tech saturated world”
- Why did we start to knit?

If I Was A Rich Girl:
Dana: honestly, not really jonesing for anything right now. Just wanting to use up stash!
Brittany: I’d go crazy at SSK! But seriously, there are a few vendors I’ve never tried, so I’m excited to get to see their stuff in person.

Mid Year Update- our beginning of the year thread is here
Dana:

  • knit at least 14000yds in 2013 I am WAY on track for this. Right now I’m sitting at 11000+ yards and it’s only July!
  • knit at least 3 more sweaters in 2013, at least (right now I’m leaning toward the Bailey Cardigan for the SSK #2 KAL, Less Is More by Amy King out of handspun, and I’m going to get back to the Rocky Coast Cardigan) Finished Every Last Yard and Old Man & The Sea. Planning to knit a sweater out of my Nest fiber, plus at least 2 more out of commercial yarn at this point.
  • finish the “Brown Bagging It” KAL- at least 6 months’ worth, and bonus points if I accomplish more! Epic fail. I have only finished one.

Spinning:

  • spin at least 16oz a month… preferably 20oz… for a total of 12lb for the year (hopefully 15lb!). So far I think I’m doing really well on this. I’m averaging 19oz a month counting July and have spun a total of 8.38lb this year. I think I’ll hit 15lb, easy.
  • no buying fiber until KY! (clubs aren’t included, and I’m in 2) Well I think I failed on this… but we went to MDSW and I totally blew it out there. Oops.
  • try the following techniques: unsupported long draw, more art yarn techiques from Spin Art like corespinning (I already know how but need to get better!) and autowrapping. I haven’t really done any of this, but hope to do a little bit at SSK, especially long draw.
  • spin for at least 2 sweaters. Technically I have 2 sweater SIPs. I’ll end up finishing both by the fall I think.

Shop Goals:

  • introduce 2 more yarn bases Introduced Worsted in June, plan to introduce a new sock yarn in October.
  • introduce 3 more fiber bases Done! Introduced Gray Merino, Superwash BFL, and Panda. Might have a new one or two in store for the fall too… we’ll see.
  • try to stay ahead on my shop updates instead of having to get them ready right before they go live I could do better on this. After SSK I’m going to make a real effort.
  • make a color cards page on my blog so I can have all of my repeatable colorways in one location Done!
  • come up with at least 3 new colorways a month Done!
  • stay ahead of holiday colorways by at least 2 months I haven’t done very much as far as holiday colors go this year. But that’s ok, because I’ll be releasing Halloween colorways right after SSK. :)

Brittany:

  • Coldsheep until KY fiber festival in May. Yes, 5 months with no yarn buying! Then, cold sheep again until SSK. – I did terribly with this. There was a sale at my LYS, I bought a couple things on etsy/destash…
  • Finish my WIPS.- 50%
  • Knit more than I did in 2012 (5732 yds)- Woohoo! Only July and I’m almost past that goal.
  • Knit at least 2 sweaters- Done!
  • Focus on one skein projects that aren’t socks

Announcements:

  • Signups for the next round of the 2 Crafty Girls Club are still open through July 17. This round is also themed “Art History”, with UYC doing the August shipment and ACG doing the September shipment. US memberships are $55.50 and international memberships are $74, which includes 2 yarn shipments, shipping, and a postcard of each inspirational artwork. You can sign up here.
  • Dana is selling her Sidekick spinning wheel! Preference will be given to someone who can pick it up in person at SSK. The wheel comes with 4 bobbins (instead of the usual 3) and all of the original accessories. She would like to get $700 for the wheel (regular retail is $785 plus $29 for each additional bobbin). Please PM her ASAP if you’re interested, so she can know to bring it to SSK!! (otherwise she’ll probably not have room for it in her car). She needs to know for sure by 10amET on 7/19 so it can be brought to SSK.

Brittany: Andover by Jennifer Wood, $6 Found using Rav’s new feature Pattern Recommendations (it will show you patterns based on your queued items, made items, and favorited patterns)

Discussion: Cream Tea eBook by Laura Aylor ($6 Rav download)
Lots of variety- cables, knit/purl pattern, garter
Devonshire Cream is our favorite
Hot Tea would be good for handspun
Cinnamon Scone looks really soft and we love the knit/purl patterning in a neutral yarn

WDYWTHA: Intarsia v. Fair Isle (asked by dawnturner)
Dana’s first project: Fake Isle Hat
Brittany’s first project: Mini Christmas Stocking Ornament
Neither of us really care for intarsia. Too difficult to get the tension even. We both made the finger moustache… here is Brittany’s and here is Dana’s.
Tips for good fair isle:

  • Make sure your yarns are EXACTLY the same grist. Otherwise one will be more prominent when you look at your work.
  • Never carry floats for more than 5 stitches (4 if using heavier yarn) without twisting.
  • Periodically stretch your work out to make sure you’re not pulling your floats too tight, and keep in mind that you’re going to be blocking your work so err on the side of being just a bit too loose rather than too tight. You can’t cure too tight in the blocking.
  • Don’t twist your yarn in the same place on the back of your work every time. It creates a “seam” that’s visible on the right side.

Things to look for when picking a first fair isle pattern: be reasonable… only go for a 2 or 3 color pattern. Or better yet, do one solid with one multicolor! It really gives you a lot of bang for your buck.

Some of our other Fair Isle projects:
Dana’s Selbu Modern, Brittany’s Selbu Modern, Dana’s La Joie du Printemps Mittens, Brittany’s Falling Snow Stocking, Dana’s Falling Snow Stocking, Dana’s Temple Cats Hat, Brittany’s Opus Spicatum

Cakewalk Yarns Contest: Just One More Season Contest
The Bluths are coming back! Thankfully, my favorite canceled show Arrested Development is making a comeback with a highly anticipated 4th season this spring!! We at Cakewalk Yarns have had faith all along. In fact, we are the home of 16 Arrested Development colorways (and counting). The wait is killing me, so I will pass the time re-watching Seasons 1-3, dyeing up yarns & amusing myself with colorway names (OK yes – the names have nothing to do with the actual colorways – who says you have to be literal?)
How about you? Is there a canceled TV show you wish would come back for Just One More Season? Or are you like Lucille Bluth (“I don’t understand the question & I refuse to respond”)?
Dana: FIREFLY!!! DOLLHOUSE
Brittany: agree with Firefly! Buffy & The IT Crowd.
To enter to win, please leave a message with your response in the episode 55 contest thread in the Ravelry group. You must be a member of the group to win, blog responses will not count as entries, and no chatter in the contest thread please! You can chatter all you want in the main episode thread. :)

The prize: a skein of Cakewalk Yarns Big Deal in "Hey Brother"

Episode 50: WE’RE FIFTY!!!

Thank you for joining us for episode 50 of Just One More Row! This episode is sponsored by AnotherCraftyGirl.

ACG Banner Dec 2012
Another Crafty Girl is a one-girl operation, dyeing up variegated, overdyed and tonal yarns. ACG’s colorways are based on things she loves, whether it’s a video game, TV show, movie, or something from nature. She boils that love down into a colorway through a series of super-secret processes, sometimes involving crayons. She then uses more super-secret skills to apply it to her favorite yarn bases which are all lovely and range from sock to worsted weight. Her super-secret processes preserve some of the love and automagically infuse a bit of it into every skein. She updates her shop on (almost every) Monday at anothercraftygirl.etsy.com and new colorways are created monthly.

Episode 37: Kentucky Bound!

Hello and welcome to Episode 37 of Just One More Row! This month, Just One More Row podcast is proud to be sponsored by Erin.Lane Bags.

We are a mother daughter team that works by day and crafts by night and every other minute we can spare between bites of chocolate. We are the super-organizing squad that is dedicated to helping fiber artists get and stay organized.
At Erin.Lane we have designed our lines of organizational tools with the fiber artist in mind. Since we are knitters ourselves, we understand the addiction to all things fiber. We know the frustration of frogging a sweater and the elation of finishing your first pair of knitted socks. Keeping that in mind, we have designed our products to keep you organized with little effort, so you can keep crafting.
We have had many a moment at the sewing machine laughing until we cried. We want to share our passion for keeping the knitting and crochet enthusiast organized with our KnitPack needle cases and our line of bags and totes, so the world can be a warmer and more beautiful place.

In this episode, we talk about Dana’s wedding, what we’ve been working on, what we’ve finished, what we’ve queued, what we’re wishing for, a review of a really neat book, and a TON of announcements. We hope you guys enjoy the episode, and we look forward to your contest entries!

Announcements:

  • We will be at Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival this weekend! If you’re also attending and would like to meet up, please feel free to say something in the new Ravelry thread on the subject in our group. If there is enough interest, we will plan an official meetup for Saturday.
  • Dana is pleased to announce that she and Sarah (ponkie) of Another Crafty Girl are teaming up to do a yarn club! It is called 2 Crafty Girls, and the theme and all of the details will be released on the new Ravelry group for the club, here. There will be 30 spots available for the club, and two will be given away as prizes, one on JOMR and one on The Knit Girllls podcast. The club will be for 2 months (this round), July and August, with Dana dyeing one month and Sarah dyeing the other month. The spots will be assigned via a lottery system. More details on that to come in the Ravelry group! Sarah and Dana hope you’ll consider joining the group and entering the lottery for a spot in the club, because they are so excited about it!
  • We are not planning to have a Ravelympics team this year, or participate in the Ravelympics. Because we are both participating in the TdF, and because the past 2 Ravelympics have led to knitting burnout for both of us, we are electing not to join in this year. However, if you guys would like to start a thread and talk about your Ravelympics goals and knitting/spinning progress, we would be happy to see one and cheer you on!
  • This episode’s contest: Erin.Lane bucket bag prize! What knitting, notions, or project bag is missing from your collection? When it comes to that “missing bag”, if you could design your own perfect bag to meet your needs, what would it be like? Be as descriptive as possible, and post your answer in the Episode 37 thread in the Ravelry group! You must be a member of the Ravelry group to win this prize. Thanks!

  • We still have a few months of 2012 available for podcast sponsors, so if you own an indie company or produce knitting/spinning related goods or services, we would love to talk to you! Please email us at our podcast email, and we’ll give you all of the details!

Discussion: KnitScene Winter ‘11
Brittany: A little disappointed with the cover; a weird complaint, but it didn’t grab me. Brown summery looking top- nothing about it says winter to me. I want to be thinking about bundling up by the fire! Not a walk on the beach. But, anyway…
Zelda Cloche! We all know I love a good cloche.
Mandalina Mittens: I would DEFINITELY make, but the colors are an “interesting” choice- no real contrast, very hard to see the beautiful pattern.
Netherleigh Cardigan: simple and very cute. I could definitely wear this. I love the little birds on it, too. Could be anything you want to embroider on it, though.
Ramona Cowl: I love paisley! I don’t see me doing it in bright rainbow colors, but I would make it.
Wragby Cardigan: like it better on the non-model here!

Dana: I feel the same way about the cover. What the heck is up with that picture?!
Vera Cardigan: love it! I especially love the button loops on the pockets.
I like the Madalina Mittens too.  Would definitely use higher contrasting colors.
Tereza Pullover: for some reason I really like this, although it’s not like anything I already own.
Ramona Cowl: I would definitely do it in a Zauberball. That would make it very interesting.
Bermondsey Cardigan: lovely for just knocking around. I wouldn’t make Nevis because it’s laceweight.
Wragby Cardigan: the fronts are very interesting.
Netherleigh Cardigan: by my new fave designer, Amy Christoffers!  Love the embroidery- fabulous.

Quick Fiber In The Boro Recap:
We had a great time meeting some listeners, and hanging out with The Knit Girllls!  Dana did really well, and so did Lori.  Brittany ended up buying some fiber from Dana, some stitch markers from Lori, and a braid of roving from Storied Yarns.  If you are in the area next year, you should really try to come to the show!  It was such a nice time and there were so many great vendors! (The stuff Dana bought post-SAFF/pre-FITB: superwash BFL sock set from Corgi Hill Farms, Frabjous Day Falkland from KnittyandColor)

On The Needles/Bobbins:
Dana: Technicolor Drake socks, Abalone Swirl BFL on Sidekick, nothing on Suzie, Gnome Acres Merino/Silk on new Spanish Peacock Russian
Brittany: Mom’s Sparkly Brown Socks, Candy Stripe Raglan, finished spinning Stormfront on the Sonata, still have Mare Vitalis on the Symphony.

FOs/Yarns:
Dana: ICED!!!, Unwind Yarn Company Periwinkle Swirl BFL, KnittyandColor Ultralight At Night Merino/Silk
Brittany: “Drunken Witch” on Dana’s Sidekick (mix of “Lime in the Coconut” and “Elphaba”)

Rich Girl:
Dana: 200 Fair Isle Motifs: A Knitter’s Directoryby Mary Jane Mucklestone ($24.95 list price, $15.44 Amazon price, due to release Nov 29 2011)
Brittany: Coastal Knits by Alana Dakos and Hannah Fettig ($22)

Review: Coastal Knits:
Dana: Dana loves the layout of this book and the way everything is basically storyboarded.  Her favorite pattern by far is the Rocky Coast Cardigan and already has the yarn for it.  She also loves the Gnarled Oak Cardigan (might have to dye the yarn for this one herself), Wildflower Cardigan (she even like the goldenrod color it’s in, and so does Brittany), Rustling Leaves Beret (picturing this in deep green or red… maybe her Bugga?), Cambrian Cowl (handspun!), Branching Out Mitts (scrap yarns?), Sand and Sea Shawlette (wouldn’t take a whole skein of fingering weight, and the contrast color could be leftovers from another project).
Brittany: Likes the fact that they’re friends and came together for the book, like what Dana & she do for the podcast.  She likes the aesthetics and layout of the book, and the different storylines.  Brittany likes the Rocky Coast Cardigan, Rustling Leaves Beret, and the Sand and Sea Shawlette.  She thinks the Branching Out Mitts would be cute if they were longer, and she’d knit the Bayside Pullover in a different yarn (no linen!).

Discussion: Different Uses for Different Fibers/Handdyed Yarns:
In this segment we discuss fibers and yarns, and the different uses for each.

New in the Queue:

If I Was A Rich Girl:
Dana: Care/Launder Gift Tags from Sunday Drive Designs on Etsy ($6 for 12)
Brittany: (Not Safe For Work!) Notions Box from TheQuirkySquirrel on Etsy ($11.95)

Discussion: How Dana Got Started Dyeing
Pointers:
1. don’t buy a ton of dyes or bases until you’re sure you want to do a lot of dyeing. The setup is the most expensive part.
2. use separate pots/pans for dyeing than you do for preparing food, even if the dyes you use say “food safe”.  The oils/chemicals used on the yarns/fibers might NOT be food safe, even if the dyes are.
3. Dana uses Jacquard dyes, and all you really need to mix any color you want are the primaries (sun yellow, cherry red, sky blue).  You might want to pick up a color wheel too, just to have handy. (mentions the Jacquard Starter Set on Knitpicks)
4. Test your dyes on a paper towel before applying to yarn/fiber. Once dye is set it’s almost impossible to remove, so it’s better to make mistakes on a paper towel than on a skein and have to overdye it.
5. if you plan to sell your yarns/fibers, (in Dana’s opinion) do NOT dye with vinegar. It stinks! Use citric acid instead.
6. Hand Dyeing Yarn and Fleece: Custom-Color Your Favorite Fibers with Dip-Dyeing, Hand-Painting, Tie-Dyeing, and Other Creative Techniques"" by Gail Callahan is a great resource.  So is Color in Spinning by Deb Menz.
7. don’t be surprised if a dyer refuses to tell you where they buy their yarn/fibers. That’s proprietary information to a lot of dyers and that’s a big deal to some and not as big a deal to others.  Just be prepared to be met with resistance if you start asking questions of that nature.
8. there are lots of great groups on Ravelry that are centered around dyeing yarns/fibers.  Some of the ones Dana found by doing a search for “dyeing” on Ravelry include: What A Kool Way To Dye (kool-aid dyeing), Plants to Dye For (info on plants for natural dyeing), Natural Dyeing (self-explanatory), Inspired Dyeing (inspiration for dye colors) (these are all on the first page only!).  Here’s a link to the search Dana did.

If you’ve bought something from Dana’s shop, she’d love it if you’d show what you’ve done with your purchase in her Ravelry group!  Thank you!

Discussion: How We Chose Our Wheels

In this segment, we talk about what how we decided on our wheels, and what criteria we used to pick them.  Dana ordered her first wheel, her Fricke ST160, in October 2009 from Spunky Eclectic, and paid it off in payments by mid-December 2009.  She learned very quickly that she prefers double treadle wheels to single treadle wheels, and decided to sell her Fricke to get another wheel in early 2010.  She asked Morgaine from Carolina Homespun to bring a Kromski Sonata and a Majacraft Suzie to Stitches South so she could try them both, and she decided on the Suzie pretty much immediately.  The Little Gem II travel wheel followed in November 2010 when it popped up on the For Sale Or Trade thread on the Majacraft group on Ravelry; it was too good of a deal to pass up!

Brittany didn’t originally intend to learn to spin, but on her first trip to SAFF last year, she became a convert.  She tried several different styles of wheels, but had her heart set on a Saxony style wheel until she tried the Kromski Sonata and fell in love immediately!  She knew she had to have that wheel, and it ended up being her Christmas present from her husband. Susan from Susan’s Fiber Shop gave her an impromptu lesson on the sales floor at SAFF:very sweet!  Brittany got a chance to spin on Dana’s Suzie, as well as another friend’s Schacht Ladybug, and got mini spinning lessons from a lot of people at SAFF.

Dana’s criteria for spinning wheels: easy to carry/portable, room to grow as your skills develop, lots of available accessories, pretty to look at (mentions Howard’s Feed and Wax for treating the wooden parts of spinning wheels)

Brittany’s criteria for spinning wheels: asthetically pleasing(dark finish wood is a must!), hardy design, room to grow as your skills develop, large drive wheel for more momentum

Dana’s dream wheels: Majacraft Rose and Hansen MiniSpinner

Brittany’s dream wheels: Majacraft Rose and Kromski Symphony

We recommend that anyone who is looking at getting a spinning wheel sit down at as many wheels as possible before buying one- you don’t know what’s going to be the best fit for your body until you try it!  If you have a spinning guild close by or a spinning friend with a wheel you can try, then have someone sit down with you and explain the parts of a wheel to you so you can tell the differences between the different features of a wheel.  Don’t close your mind to a particular style of wheel until you’ve tried it; you don’t know if you’ll love it or hate it until you try it!  If you have special physical considerations (like arthritis, bad knees, bad back, etc.) then call up a spinning shop or spinning instructor and ask them to make recommendations based on your particular needs.  Be on the lookout for used wheels on both the Used Tools & Equipment board on Ravelry, as well as the For Sale threads on the individual wheel manufacturers’ groups on Ravelry, because sometimes you can save as much as 30% by buying a gently used wheel!  Don’t try out a brand new wheel with slick fibers like merino; use corriedale or bluefaced leicester wool because it will give you a better idea of how the wheel works.  Ask people at fiber festivals what they love about their wheels and ask for recommendations; do your research!

Here is a guide to the styles of wheels, so you can get a visual of the terms we discuss in this segment.  We hope this discussion is helpful to those of you that are looking to buy your first wheel.  If you have any more questions, don’t hestitate to PM either one of us, or ask your question in the Ravelry group! :)

Announcements:

Discussion: Knitting Techniques: What Have You Mastered, & What’s Next For You?
In this discussion we talk about where we’ve been in our knitting journey, and where we plan to go next as we grow and learn as knitters.  Brittany’s major challenge for this year was entrelac, and she made a beautiful scarf using that technique this year.  She was also very intimidated by cabling when she first tried it, but when she really sat down and worked on it it wasn’t as hard as she thought it would be.  Dana stipulates that no knitting technique is really HARD, when you break it down into its components: knitting and purling.  Don’t bite off more than you can chew, but don’t be afraid to try new things: it’s just knitting!  Brittany believes that most things that LOOK hard in knitting usually aren’t, when you actually try them.  Dana says that your current life situations can dictate how hard your projects can be; if she’s going through a tough time, she needs easier projects, and if she’s just coasting along, harder projects can be achieved.  Dana was intimidated by the Branching Out Scarf from Knitty in 2006; she and a friend from Kentucky decided to do a KAL of that pattern and it completely defeated her at the time.  After about 6 months of not working on it, she picked it up again and was able to do it!  Brittany had the same situation with the same pattern- how ironic!  Reading your knitting is a skill that is very important when you are trying new techniques, and it’s something that comes with practice and after you’ve “logged a bit of knitting mileage”, as Dana puts it.  Being able to read your knitting is also important in case you lose your pattern!  Smartphones are great- both Brittany and Dana have one, and put their knitting patterns on them so that they’re never without their patterns.  Dana mentions the Celtic Cable Cap; that pattern defeated her when she first tried it, but she might try it again soon.  Dana is still a bit intimidated by “true lace”, aka lace patterning on every single row with no rest rows, such as a Shetland, Orkney, or Orenburg lace shawl.  Dana is also intimidated by seaming, and wants to finally knit a finer-gauge sweater in pieces and seam it together- that’s the whole reason she’s taking the finishing class at SAFF this year.  Dana mentions her Elias’s Hippo that she took her time on seaming, and it turned out great!  Brittany mentions her Elefante, which required a lot of seaming as well.

This month’s contest is going to be so much fun!  We want to hear about your knitting technique challenges: what have you conquered, and what’s next on your list?  Please leave a comment in Episode 20′s thread on our Ravelry group, or leave a message on this post; we’ll count everybody who posts (just one entry per person, please- but feel free to chat as much as you want in the thread, as you’ll only be counted once!), and at the end of the month we’ll draw using the Random Number Generator for this gorgeous yarn!

Review: Interweave Weekend 2011
This is the largest Weekend ever- 33 projects!  The article about using office supplies for knitting notions is pretty awesome- we liked that a lot.  (mentions No Sheep for You, the book the Tomato sweater is in)  A note on blocking: these mats from Target are cheaper than most blocking mats and are really huge- great for any size project that you need to block.  The scarf-tying article is awesome- and very useful!! Patterns Dana likes: Diana’s Cardigan, Gansey Legwarmers, Mixt Cowl, Seabreeze Cowl, Purl Stripe Cardigan, Elm Street Socks, Matthew’s Yoke Pullover, 8000 Feet Hoodie,(mentions Pembroke Vest), Twisted-Stitch Stockings.

Review: Twist Collective Fall 2011
Lots of lovely sweaters in this edition!  This is the biggest one ever: 38 patterns!  Brittany loves: Crane Creek, Delius, Dylan, Evendim, Hosta, Scout, Roseling.

(Dana mentions buying a Namaste Zuma bag in Peacock from The Loopy Ewe!  She also got some Opal Rainforest sock yarn and some Colinette Jitterbug sock yarn in Kingfisher- they now have 400 yard skeins!)

Review/Discussion: A Half-Year Review
Brittany’s goals:  more sweaters!, learn entrelac, at least 6 socks, make *something* with handspun, cold sheeping
What Brittany’s done so far:
- sweaters? HA.
- entrelac? yes, made entrelac scarf
- 6 socks? knit 4, two in progress right now
- something with handspun? mitts, hat, socks in progress
- cold sheeping? eh, better than expected, but could do better, especially now that I spin
- my goal for the second half of the year is to finish a summer sweater (casting on Buttercup again), make a Candy-Striped Raglan Sweater (out of her Noro Silk Garden and her Dream In Color Classy in Chinatown Apple), Jaywalker Socks and vanilla socks (Dana mentions Crosswalkers).  I hope to spin more in the second half of the year, and use the skills I learned during the Tour de Fleece to motivate me to spin different things.

Dana’s goals: more socks! sweaters!, take on more challenging projects instead of everything being quick-knit stuff, knit down more of the stash, stop buying yarn without a purpose in mind.
What Dana’s done so far:
- 9 pairs of socks!!!
- started 2 sweaters (well Garter Yoke was started in December ‘10 but I’m counting it!), haven’t finished either of them.
- finished Sock History Wallhanging: something I’m really really proud of.
- learned how to weave and wove 3 scarves (4th is on the loom right now!) plus 2 dishtowels
- knit 3 shawls
- cold sheeping? Well I’ve bought 3 skeins of Wollmeise… and some other sock yarn… and the yarn for my Stripey Tomato… oops.
- overall I’ve knit 28 projects and wove 3 projects… my numbers definitely could be better.  I’ve knit 6.42 miles and spun 7.05 miles so far this year.  I hope to get to 15 miles of spinning and 12 miles of knitting by the end of this year… we’ll see!
- my goal for the second half of the year is to actually stick to the goals I made at the beginning of the year. I want to do some colorwork (been craving it a lot lately) and I want to make the Acer Cardigan specifically.  The Sarah Rose cardigan might have to get made too (thanks to a listener for gifting it to me and B!!!).  This year the Tour de Fleece taught me that I am setting my goals too low because I achieved way more than I thought I could.  (mentions Bristlecone Artisan Heirlooms- home of the Glindle spindle! HERE is a link to a picture of Dana’s Glindle!)

Announcements:

  • SAFF is October 21-23 in Asheville NC.  Signups for classes are still open if you want to take one- not all of them are full!
  • Fiber in the ‘Boro is October 29 in Murfreesboro TN- and Dana is vending! :)

Prize drawing winner for July’s Donation Incentive is love2knit!  Congratulations!!! Please get in touch with Dana so she can mail your prize to you!

  • This month’s contest is a Half-Year Resolutions contest: please leave us a comment in the episode thread on Ravelry (or on this blog post if you aren’t on Ravelry) and tell us about your resolution progress, what your goals were, if you’ve achieved them, and what you plan to do with the rest of the year. Each individual that posts a comment gets one entry (just one per person), so please feel free to comment on each others’ posts! We look forward to reading them and discussing with you guys! :) Here’s the prize for this contest:

Brittany: Lots of stuff! The Shop Sales & Discounts thread on the Tour de Fleece board is killing me!

Review of Knitscene Fall ‘11:
Dana: The article by Amy Herzog about fitting your knits is incredible. As far as patterns go, I love the Charlemont Cardigan, the Montview Cardigan, the Lowry Pullover, the Whittier Hat, and the Live Oak Shawlette. Interweave needs to hurry up and make this magazine available by subscription!! (mentions the Geodesic Cardigan- her attempt at a fingering/laceweight sweater that failed miserably)
Brittany: LOVE.  Patterns I love- Pinstripe Pullover, Cooke Cardigan, Lepidoptera Cardigan, Morrison Cardigan!, Southmoor Hat, Live Oak Shawlette.  Overall the whole aesthetic is amazing! The “tone” of the mag flows very well together. I may not want to knit every pattern, but I do like them all. WHEN has that ever happened??

Episode 15: Swedish Chef Hats and Prepping for the TdF

Hey there, and welcome to Episode 15!  We’re so glad you’ve joined us!  In this episode we talk about what we’re working on, the things we’ve finished, what we’ve queued, what we’d buy if we were rich girls, how we organize our stashes, the Tour de Fleece, and have a few announcements!  If we missed any links, please email us!  Enjoy! :)

On Our Needles/Bobbins:
Dana: Stripey Tomato, Luna’s Shawl, Fat Cat Knits “London Fog” Superwash BFL, Corgi Hill Farms “Kelp” Falkland
Brittany: Quick Cable Slouch Hat (Dana goes into a brief exhortation about using small enough needles for hat ribbing because it can stretch sooo much- both Dana and Brittany have had hats grow too much after a few hours of wear! Dana tells a particularly horrific story about her Grace Beret that grew to Swedish Chef-size proportions.), Unwind Yarn Company batt

FOs/Yarns:
Dana: Scarf Made For Travelling, Ball Sack (mentions Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga), Cottage Garden Merino (mentions Cascade Quattro)
Brittany: :( Lost the mojo lately.

New In The Queue:
Dana: Sprout- Growing Roots by Amy King (free) (mentions Temperance)
Brittany: The Brennan Cardigan by Glenna C (free) (mentions Saroyan and Traveling Woman)

If I Was A Rich Girl:
Dana: Snowball microphone for podcast (mentions Rachel from KnitCents podcast)
Brittany: Little Red Bicycle sock yarn on Etsy (Dana mentions the Sock Yarn One-Skein Wonders: 101 Patterns That Go Way Beyond Socks! book)

Discussion: How Do We Organize Our Stashes?
(asked by Turtlegirl76 on our group on Ravelry)
Dana: My stash is mainly contained in plastic rubbermaid containers on a large chrome rack in my office. My needles are kept in Erin.Lane organizers. As far as project bags go, I love the GoKnit pouches with the locking strings and Erin.Lane bags are wonderful because they stay closed.  I also have Pretty Cheep project bags and a few from MissFiberFox on Etsy because they can hold a whole sweater’s worth of Cascade 220.  My notions go in a Namaste Buddy case (I have one in red and one in charcoal).  My favorite knitting bag is my Namaste Zuma bag in charcoal, but my dedicated knitting bag is my Loopy Groupie zip-top tote bag.  (mentions Erin.Lane‘s summer sale: enter code SUMMERSALE11 to save 15% on everything in her shop through June 25, 2011!)

Dana's Stash

Brittany: My stash is mostly in a small cabinet, with sock yarn in a separate basket, and sweater quantities in another. Fiber stash is in blanket bags. Finished handspun is kept separate, too. I like having it where I can see it clearly because it helps with inspiration!  I use a lot of Erin.Lane organizational supplies too… needle cases, project bags, etc.

You can find most of the information about the Tour de Fleece on the Ravelry group’s main page here.

* This year’s dates are July 2-24.

* What teams are we on?
Dana: Team LSG, Team Majacraft, Team Fat Cat Knits
Brittany: Team LSG

* What are our goals?
Dana: spin up a sweater’s quantity of Moonshadow on Falkland on my Suzie for Team Fat Cat Knits, spin 15 minutes a day on my spindle for Team LSG, finish a 3-ply sock yarn on my Little Gem for Team Majacraft
Brittany: spin 15 minutes a day

* And the most important thing… there are prizes given every single day of the tour in each day’s progress thread.  Be sure to post a picture of your progress every day so that you can be entered to win!  It doesn’t matter if you only spun a tiny bit- you can’t win if you don’t post pictures!   Also you can enter for a random number drawing on this thread to win a prize at the end of the Tour.  Prizes that are going to be given away in the daily drawings are on this thread.

* What is the best way to prepare for the Tour? The Knitmore Girls have a training schedule available on their blog/podcast. Pay attention to ergonomics, take frequent breaks, and set reasonable goals for yourself.

* Dana’s a sponsor of the Tour this year!  She’s having a sale in her Etsy shop through July 24 (the end of the Tour) to celebrate- enter code TDF2011 to get the discount.

FOs/Yarns:

Brittany: Quick Cable Slouch Hat (free), inspired by Dana’s.

Recap of Middle TN Fiber Festival:
The festival was free, and had ample parking.  We were able to park within 20 yards of the front door both days.  Food was reasonably priced for fair food, and what we had wasn’t greasy (yaay!).  Did require a bit of walking because the buildings were spaced out a bit, but that let you feel like you could catch your breath between vendors and not get overwhelmed by choices.  Dana loved all the fresh air that the weekend provided- the fairgrounds were also very clean and bathrooms were readily available.  Sheep shearing was fun to watch and they liked to be petted, and we liked how soft our hands were afterward!  There was one particularly vocal sheep that was hilarious.  Brittany would say the best thing overall was seeing friends!  We got to see each other, got to meet a couple of listeners, ran into people we knew, and Christine came down to see us.

We really enjoyed our silk spinning class with Judy Crouch of A Twist In Time!  We learned how to spin silk caps, bombyx silk, tussah silk, BFL/silk blend, throwster’s waste, silk noil, and sari silk.  We really felt like the class was a good addition to our spinning repertoire and would take another class with Judy anytime we got a chance!  We also enjoyed getting to take the class with our listeners, Flutterbys and EweManiac!  It was wonderful getting to meet listeners in person! :)

Brittany’s stuff:

Icelandic Batt from Blackberry Hill Farm
Batt from Yarnadoodledoo! Natural color, sari silk mixed in (local to Nashville)
Batts from Dana! (“Miss Scarlett” merino/firestar batt and “B” bfl/merino/tussah silk/sari silk/firestar/angelina batt)
Chasing Rainbows Dyeworks 100% bombyx silk- autumnal colors (different for me!)
Silk caps- gift from Dana from Moonwood Farms

Dana’s stuff:
3oz camel down from Marsh Mellow Meadows
Art batt from Wild Hair Studios (1.6oz, romeldale/cvm/cotswold/alpaca/sari silk/angelina)
(next 3 from Twist In Time) 4oz merino/silk Ashland Bay top (sea mist colorway)
4oz BFL/silk blend top
undyed silk cap (.8oz)
purple/gold/navy dyed silk cap from Moonwood Farms (.8oz)
1oz dyed silk hankies from Chrysalis Fibers (ocean blue/mint/gray)
Blackberry Hill Farms’ “Ravanna”’s Heart & Soul Spinning Batts (3) @ 2oz each for 6oz total, chocolate brown icelandic fleece & sari silk bits

Brittany: not buyable that I know of, but more magic yarn balls! (Dana mentions Sophie’s Toes Etsy Store, which carries a form of magic yarn balls… no surprises inside, just yarn! Here and here are the ones that Dana has.)

Review: Interweave Knits Summer 2011
Dana: Congrats to our friends Brittany & Wyane of KnitWitch for having their yarn bowl featured in this issue!  :)  I loved the photos in this one!  Especially the “popsicles” on the review of different bast fibers. (Brittany agrees!) I LOL’d when I read the article on Ben Cuevas and the quote at the end: “He invites anyone who has a locker room where he could knit in the nude to contact him.” (I’d love to hear about the follow up on this one!)  The article on making your own pictoral lace motifs is intriguing- I might try that sometime. Kathy Zimmerman is freaking amazing- I loved getting a better peek into her life and design aesthetics. (mentioned: Marseilles Pullover, Fern Sweater, Bryn Mawr Cardigan)  As far as patterns go, I like the Adriatic Cardigan, the Swirl Skirt, the Lion Oh! Sweater, the Amelia Hoodie, and the Hourglass Lace Socks.  I’m excited about the Interweave Knit & Spin special edition magazine, but don’t know when it’s going to be in stores- do any of you know?
Brittany: I like the Adriatic Cardigan a lot, and the Hourglass Lace Socks. Really like the Swirl Skirt, but unsure if I’d wear it. I liked the silk article- really informative on types of silk. (and applicable considering we’re taking a silk spinning class…)  I feel like the lighting is odd, and there is a lot of weird styling/colors on the models, considering it’s summer… (and Dana agrees!)

Events:
Middle TN Fiber Festival: May 27-28, 2011 in Dickson TN.  Let us know if you’re going to be there!  We have a class on Friday but will be available to hang out on Saturday!

Review: KnitScene Summer 2011
We think KnitScene is just awesome.  It’s styled in a way that’s more attractive to us than a lot of the knitting magazines are.  We like lots of patterns in this issue, including  the Windsor Cardi, Lodi Caridgan, Sackets Harbor Pullover, Mountour Falls CardiganPenumbra Tee (looks like the neckline on the Lotus Blossom Tank Dana started last summer!), and the Radian Yoke.  Dana really likes the article on mitered corners- really makes a sweater look “finished”!  There are interesting articles in this one, including a biography of Amy Christoffers and an article by Stephen West on garter stitch.  We felt they missed the mark in the “Sail Away” section… none of the designs actually say “nautical” to us, but we love the clothes the models are wearing.  Overall, our opinion is that this is the first summer edition of a magazine that we’ve wanted to knit more than one thing, so we recommend it buying it!

Summer Sweater KAL:

  • Starts May 1, ends August 1
  • No rules about what pattern you can use… and if you started a summer sweater a week or two ago and only have a little bit done, please join us anyway!
  • Here is the chatter thread, and here is the FO thread.
  • Prizes are: 1.4oz lincoln/merino/silk/milk batt from Tyrannosaurus Knits, 3 sets of stitchmarkers from EBunnyCrafts, and some yarn we’ll pick up at MTFAF.

Tyrannosaurus Knits Batt in "New Growth"

Three beautiful sets of stitch markers from EBunnyCrafts!

Discussion: Knitter’s Book of Wool by Clara Parkes
Brittany likes how comprehensive the book is because it doesn’t favor one topic over another: it tries to cover all of them concisely.  Dana was a little bored by the scientific explanations, because that’s not how she chooses her fiber; she’s very tactile and tends to choose by texture first, and color second.  Brittany enjoyed the scientific explanations because they helped her understand a bit more about the breeds she’s interested in spinning in the future, and really enjoyed reading about breeds she’s already spun and their characteristics.  Dana was definitely interested to see that most of her favorite wools to spin (polwarth, cormo, rambouillet, merino) are all in one category: finewools.  Brittany thinks that the list of wool processors is pretty cool, and Dana loves the listings of fiber festivals, athough it’s incomplete… it does give a website (go here, click on Events) that has more complete listings of all fiber festivals, and if you know of one that isn’t listed you can email them information so  they can add it.  Patterns Dana liked: Risti Mittens (maybe without that crazy-colored cuff), Bella Baby Ensemble, and the Prairie Rose Lace Shawl.  Brittany thinks that a lot of the patterns are pretty, but can’t picture herself actually knitting any of them.  Overall, we agree that this book is a fantastic resource for spinners, and an ok one for knitters- it wouldn’t be a must-have for a knitter’s library, but is a good supplementary book.  It’s a lot more useful for spinners who are looking for information on specific breeds and breed characteristics.

Announcements:

  • Middle TN Fiber Arts Festival is May 27-28 2011 in Dickson TN.  Dana is taking the Spin Silk & Have Fun class on Friday, and both Dana and Brittany will be there for most of the day on Saturday.  If you’re going to be there, let us know so we can meet up and say hi!
  • Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair is October 21-23 in Asheville NC.  Last year we stayed at the Mountain View Inn & Suites and really liked it.  It’s only about 5 minutes away from the fairgrounds, is clean and quiet (haha, unless everyone’s in the lobby!), and has free continental breakfast.  This year the manager has blocked the entire hotel for SAFF attendees at a special rate: $69 a night for a double queen room or $79 a night for a king suite.  If you’re interested in booking, the hotel phone number is 828-692-7772, and you’d probably better book soon because as of today (04/20/11) there are only 12 more rooms available at this hotel.  If this hotel is already full by the time you’re reading this, check the SAFF board on Ravelry to see if the other hotels offering special rates still have rooms available.
  • Thank you to the listener that donated to our podcast!  It really made our week, as did the two new ratings on iTunes- you guys rock!!  Keep ‘em coming!
  • Once again, if you donate $1 or more to the podcast between now and May 27, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a beautiful skein of Tyrannosaurus Knits Velociraptor Sock in the Candy Striper colorway!

"Candy Striper" Velociraptor Sock

Discussion:  What we knit in the warmer months…

Thank you ishadow72 for suggesting this topic!  If you’d like to suggest a topic for our discussion section, please post on the thread on our Ravelry group here! :)

Brittany says that socks are her go-to project, usually, but she’s wanting to do a cotton tee this summer (Buttercup and Vesper by Heidi Kirrmaier aka PipiBird on Ravelry).  She also doesn’t mind doing a sweater, as long as it’s in pieces…but she doesn’t like doing those very often.  She mentions Erin.Lane organizers and our friend Lindsey (aka followingaslan on Ravelry).  She also mentions Glaciar del Cielo yarn.

Dana knits socks and shawls, mainly.  She also tries to get a jump on her holiday gift knitting starting in the middle of summer so she doesn’t feel so rushed and can be a bit more selfish with her knitting time in the winter.  She rarely knits with pure cotton because it hurts her hands, but loves silk/cotton and wool/cotton blends.  Some favorites are Rowan Summer Tweed and Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool (Elsebeth Lavold Silky Tweed is discontinued- sorry!!).  She also loves Plymouth Sockotta (sadly discontinued) but will knit wool socks during any time of the year- she loves them!  (the length of the leg may change though)  She mentions the Lucia Tee and the Lotus Blossom Tank (knit out of Queensland Collection Hyacinth).

Us at SMFAF!

We had an absolute blast!  We loved the fact that there was free admission, parking was convenient, etc.  It definitely looked like all of the vendor spaces were full- the mark of a successful festival, in our opinion!  There were lots of natural-colored fibers as well as dyed ones, and many varieties of handdyed yarns, weaving yarns, knitting tools, looms, a wheel or two, and some spindles.

What Brittany got:  KnittyandColor Polwarth in Minerva, KnittyandColor Merino/Silk in Mare Vitalis, Gale’s Art BFL in Limited Edition (green), Gale’s Art BFL Swirl in Crayon Box

What Dana got: KnittyandColor Falkland in Stormfront, KnittyandColor art batt in Changeling, Gale’s Art show special minibatt, Trindle spindle

Dana's Trindle with singles from the Gale's Art batt

While in Gatlinburg, we went to The Best Italian Restaurant and had a wonderful meal, and visited Smoky Mountain Spinnery.  What a fabulous store!  We really loved the selection of fiber and spinning products, and Nancy was so nice to us.  We highly recommend this shop!

What Dana got: fast whorl for her Suzie spinning wheel, 6mm ehook flyer guide for her Little Gem II, Bluster Bay poke shuttle to use with her Kromski loom

If I Was A Rich Girl:

Brittany: sparkly art batt from KnittyandColor

Dana: more Trindle arms

Discussion: Interweave Knits Spring 2011 Issue:
Dana is not that big a fan of the designs, but loves the Fair Isle article!   Brittany loves the fair isle article too, especially the section about color vs value.  Dana loves the designer interview with Shirley Paden- so inspiring!  We always like the yarn review at the beginning of the magazine, because they often cover yarns that we want to know more about and can’t get locally.  Some of the yarn choices and heavy fabrics have Dana scratching her head- mohair for spring?!  Heavy cables?!  She’ll pass.  Brittany thinks that there are lots of busy tops- beautiful knitting, very aesthetically pleasing, but would look horrible on her bust.  Also there was a lot of cropped garments- not good for her body shape at all.  Both Dana & Brittany are crazy about the Ruched Yoke Tee and the Leaf & Picot Cardigan!!

Overall, if we didn’t have a subscription, we would have skipped this one- but we’re glad to be subscribers because of all of the other information that Interweave provides: fiber festival information, yarn reviews, book reviews, technique articles, etc.

We’d love to hear your take!  Tell us what you think; even if you disagree with us, we’d love to start a dialogue on this episode’s Ravelry thread!!

Events:
Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival is next weekend (March 17-19) in Townsend TN, and we are so excited!!!  We are going on Saturday 19th and would love to meet any listeners that are in attendance!!  Karen from the KnitWits is going to be going, and we are excited about meeting her!  Brittany is excited about the KnittyandColor booth at SMFAF.  Dana is excited about Gale’s Art (here are some Trindle spindles).  We’re going to Smoky Mountain Spinnery and are making up a shopping list already!

A Big Thank-You!!:

Thank you for our newest iTunes reviews and star ratings!  If you feel so inclined to leave us a review or a star rating, we’d really appreciate it.  Also, please join the Ravelry group and introduce yourself!  Thank you to Dana’s friend bobmarleychic for our brand-new logo!  She did such a great job and we really appreciate her hard work!!!
