Episode 84: No Words.

Thank you for joining us for episode 84 of Just One More Row! For the month of May we are proud to be sponsored by Dragonfly Fibers.

Dragonfly Fibers

At Dragonfly Fibers, we love color. We take inspiration from everything around us – music, art, the natural world and even popular culture and turn it into fabulous colorways. We carry yarns in weights from lace to super bulky, and we love spinners, too! We’ve got several different types of fiber including Polwarth Silk and Sea Monster, our Silk, Wool and Seacell blend. Check out our products on our website and select local yarn stores. You can also find us at major festivals and shows, including Maryland Sheep & Wool in May, STITCHES Midwest in August, Shenandoah Valley Fiber fest in September and Rhinebeck and SAFF in October.

On The Needles/Bobbins:
Dana: Evergreen Cardigan, Recovery Yoga Socks, Rainbow SRR Polwarth/Silk
Brittany: Fruit Loop Socks, Aranami Shawl

FOs:
Dana: Chris’s Sepia Socks
Brittany: Super Soft Merino Hat, UYC handspun “Summer Storm” 194 yards

New In The Queue:
Dana: The Elder Tree Shawl by Sylvia Bo Bilvia (free Ravelry download)
Brittany: Roma by Kate Osborn ($6 Ravelry download)

Stash Stories: Sock Heels
Dana:  I vastly prefer the short row garter stitch heel (part 1 andpart 2- from KnitPurlHunter). I use it on everything except when I need to preserve a color progression (ie. stripes) and then I use anafterthought heel w/ waste yarn. I’ve used the eye of partridge heel whenever I need to do a heel flap and it holds up nicely… it just takes a long time.
We mention the Double Gusset by Turtlegirl76, used in her Breaking Hearts pattern, and the Falling Snow Stocking.
Brittany: I started using heel flaps for all of my socks, then tried the short row heel when I first tried toe up. I think it looks more “finished” and prefer it to a heel flap. After that I’ve tried a garter stitch short row heel, and an afterthought heel, both of which I like for different things.
We mention Silver’s Sock Class, Hedera, and Wendy Johnson’s Toe Up Socks. Also mentioned the Skew socks.

  • TEALtember: I very happily agreed to design a new colorway in honor of TEALtember- the celebration of Ovarian Cancer Awareness.

Some facts about ovarian cancer (taken from http://www.cdc.gov):

  • causes more deaths than any other female reproductive cancer, but it accounts for only about 3% of all cancers in women

  • each year, about 20,000 women in the United States get ovarian cancer

  • among women, ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer death, after lung and bronchus, breast, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers

This is a cause that I feel very strongly about, and wanted to do a special colorway to recognize. In lieu of me donating money on behalf of my customers, I have discounted the Journey Sock yarn by $2 per skein and the Panda Sock Roving/Superwash BFL Roving by $1 per braid, and hope that you will donate that amount (plus whatever else you can afford) to one of the following ovarian cancer foundations:

http://www.ovariancancer.org/

http://www.tealtoes.org/

The preorders are for Journey Sock, Panda Sock Roving, and Superwash BFL Roving. They will be available until 8/21. I will dye these as quickly as I can and get them shipped out on a first come, first served basis. All orders will definitely be shipped by 8/30 so that you can use the yarn to celebrate TEALtember and participate in knitalongs and spinalongs to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. I do not have a preset limit on the number of preorders, but if the number of orders begins to exceed what I can conceivably get dyed within the time frame, I reserve the right to end preorders early.

TEALtember on Journey Sock (80% superwash merino/20% nylon, 400yds/100g)

TEALtember on Panda Sock Roving (60% superwash merino/30% bamboo rayon/10% nylon, each braid is 4.0-4.3oz)

TEALtember on Superwash BFL Roving (100% superwash BFL, each braid is 4.0-4.3oz)

All three of these preorders are available in my Etsy store, Unwind Yarn Company. Thanks so much for supporting this deserving cause! :)

  • Sad you didn’t get to go to SSK? We’ve got a consolation prize! We’re giving away the first issue of Ply that came in our goodie bags, and a shopping bag from the market. To enter, tell us what would you have filled your market bag with?? Let’s keep this listeners that weren’t able to attend SSK, please!

  • We will be recording our second episode of the month late because Dana will be on vacation. Didn’t want you guys to worry!

  • Thank you SO MUCH to Ginny of FatCatKnits!!!

Review: Tangerine Designs Sweater Bag

  • This is a fantastic and HUGE bag! It doesn’t have any inside pockets, but that’s ok. It measures 15 inches tall, 20 inches across when flat, it has a 8 x 12 inch rectangle flat bottom and a 9 inch handle. Its rectangular bottom means it stands up well on its own. It has a drawstring with lock so you can keep pets and children out of your knitting. It easily holds a sweater’s quantity of yarn, or in Dana’s case, an entire afghan’s worth! It is made with TD’s signature interfaced fabric with cute lining, no exposed seams, really excellent construction. Dana can’t recommend this bag enough!

Episode 51: Christmas Crazies

Thank you for joining us for episode 51 of Just One More Row! This episode is sponsored by AnotherCraftyGirl.
ACG Banner Dec 2012
Another Crafty Girl is a one-girl operation, dyeing up variegated, overdyed and tonal yarns. ACG’s colorways are based on things she loves, whether it’s a video game, TV show, movie, or something from nature. She boils that love down into a colorway through a series of super-secret processes, sometimes involving crayons. She then uses more super-secret skills to apply it to her favorite yarn bases which are all lovely and range from sock to worsted weight. Her super-secret processes preserve some of the love and automagically infuse a bit of it into every skein. She updates her shop on (almost every) Monday at anothercraftygirl.etsy.com and new colorways are created monthly.

On The Needles/Bobbins/Spindles:

Brittany: Zuzu’s Petals and Dovetail Cowl by Carina Spencer ($5 Rav downloads)

Discussion:
Dana’s 2012 Goals:

  • 12,000 yards knit in 2012

- so far, 12600yds, will probably hit 13500-14000 by the end of the month

  • socks, finish sweater wips

- 13 pairs of socks for the year (including 2 single socks as a pair… shop samples!) may hit 14 if I finish my Rosie Futures… no sweaters were finished this year (YET- I’m trying for Acer by Dec 31!) (8 pair for me, 2 pair for Chris, 2 pair for Mom, 2 individual socks)

  • spinning goals: no buying spinning fiber until Middle TN Fiber Festival in May! (w/ the exception of my 2 fiber clubs) spin from stash!

- I managed til my birthday, but then didn’t buy any more fiber til Kentucky (we didn’t go to Middle TN). I have spun 11600yds this year (not counting yarn that is almost done), will hopefully hit 13000yds by the end of the month.

Brittany’s 2012 Goals:

  • Finish Candy Stripe Raglan, Linen Stitch Scarf, and Herringbone Cowl
    • I only finished the Herringbone Cowl. :(
  • Knit 2 more sweaters
    • Nope. I started a few but they never worked out.
  • Knit at least 6 pairs of socks (more complicated, not all just stockinette)
    • Definitely did this! 11 pairs, counting mom’s christmas socks
  • Knit 12,000 yards in 2012
    • HAHAHA nope.
  • Spinning goals: try for 8 oz a month
    • Didn’t happen, but I’m happy with my spinning this year.

Announcements:

  • Thank you so much to Sarah of AnotherCraftyGirl for sponsoring!
  • This month’s contest: Sarah would like to know what your preferred size is for miniskeins, and if you would prefer individual skeins or sets based on a theme, or maybe even a new idea that you have. Leave a message in the episode thread, and we’ll draw 2 winners by RNG on 12/29. The prizes are: Jemaine on Strong Sock and Kris Kringle on Merino Worsted. You must be a member of the Ravelry group to win!

  • Signups for Round 3 of the 2 Crafty Girls yarn club will be opening the first week of January. The new theme will be “Art History” for 2013, and the club will run in 2 month rounds. Every round will be a lottery sign up. Be sure to check out the group for more information, as we’ll be posting a lot more about it in the next 2 weeks!
  • The greatest gift you could give us this year is awesome iTunes reviews, and other podcasters would appreciate them too! They don’t cost anything and will help us pop up in searches for knitting podcasts!

Episode 36: Questions and Answers

Today’s episode is a bit different. Since Dana is currently on her honeymoon(!!!), this is a prerecorded episode where we answer a few questions from listeners.

This episode is sponsored by Erin.Lane!

We are a mother daughter team that works by day and crafts by night and every other minute we can spare between bites of chocolate. We are the super-organizing squad that is dedicated to helping fiber artists get and stay organized.

At Erin.Lane we have designed our lines of organizational tools with the fiber artist in mind. Since we are knitters ourselves, we understand the addiction to all things fiber. We know the frustration of frogging a sweater and the elation of finishing your first pair of knitted socks. Keeping that in mind, we have designed our products to keep you organized with little effort, so you can keep crafting.

We have had many a moment at the sewing machine lauging until we cried. We want to share our passion for keeping the knitting and crochet enthusiast organized with our KnitPack needle cases and our line of bags and totes, so the world can be a warmer and more beautiful place.

Also, due to the nature of this episode, no shownotes will be posted. However, most things we talk about can be found on our project pages or easily searched on Ravelry.

Thanks for listening!

Brittany: Lollipop Yarn self-striping yarn

Product Review: Socktopus by Alice Yu ($13.57 on Amazon)
Dana: I honestly can’t think of a single pattern I don’t want to knit. I’m currently knitting “V Junkie” and the pattern is clear, well-written, and has great pictures that show the detail. There are lots of technique sections scattered throughout the book, and it really explains some of the trickier techniques used in the patterns in greater detail (with great clear pictures too!). The other thing I love about this book is that every pattern is knit with a handpainted indie dyed yarn (from the designer’s own line of yarns) so you can pretty much guess how handpainted yarns are going to behave in each pattern before testing it out yourself.
Brittany:
I love  the project gallery at the beginning. All the yarn used is very pretty and never overwhelms the patterns. She talk about the fibers that go into socks (including a brief lesson on common sheep breeds). Also, the behaviors of different ply structures (2,3,4,6,9) with clear pictures of the swatches.
Patterns themselves:
- A short blurb about why she named the pattern/ design inspiration (love!)
-Large, clear charts
-detail shots
-tutorials for new techniques interspersed as you use them
-variety of techniques that seem to get harder as you get further into the book.
-resource section
-index!

Contest Winner: We had 96 entries! The winner is 33, LizinMemphis. Congratulations!

Announcements:

  • Dana is vending Super Summer KnitTogether! :) June 30 is the vendor market, open to the public for a $5 entry fee. Details to come!

Brittany: Merryall Cardigan by Amy Christoffers ($7 download)

If I Was A Rich Girl:
Dana: Spanish Peacock Tibetan spindle
Brittany: Knit Noro: Accessories: 30 Colorful Little Knits (~$16.30 on Amazon)

Product Review: TexasJeans Spindles
Dana: I’m reviewing a top whorl drop spindle, with a marblewood whorl and ebony shaft.  The spindle weighs 36g (1.25oz) and has a durable polish on it to protect it from scratches and dings.  The fiber that I chose to spin on this spindle is a lovely blend of undyed BFL/silk. It is spinning up into a sportweight single, which will probably end up making a heavy-dk 2ply.

Brittany: I’m reviewing a  bottom whorl spindle, with a maple whorl and cherry shaft. Dana sent me a tuft of swirl BFL to try it out with. It is very heavy, and has a great spinning time. It weighs about 2 oz, and has a oil and wax finish. I felt it was great for a beginner, but I wonder if I was influenced by learning on a wheel first. I’m getting heavier singles than is normal for me, but that’s to be expected on a new tool.

Discussion: Different Sock Techniques We’ve Tried

New Contest:

What is your favorite Unplanned Peacock colorway? Discussion: Our 2012 Knitting Goals
Dana:

  • 12,000 yards knit in 2012
  • socks, finish sweater wips
  • spinning goals: no buying spinning fiber until Middle TN Fiber Festival in May! (w/ the exception of my 2 fiber clubs) spin from stash!

How AdyBee spun her entire stash down in 2011:
“I went through everything. Decided what to destash, what to keep. Then I put stuff in my 1st tier spinning pile. I have IKEA cubes that I use to delineate & prioritize my stash, one for spinning, knitting, weaving etc. And then I watched lots of videos of various techniques I hadn’t tried and then picked out which ones to use with which stash items. I actually made it through my whole stash in less than 3 months. I kept trying new things, and because I had new and exciting plans for everything I didn’t suffer from my usual paralysis (“oh god, I can’t spin this, nothing is good enough for The Precious”).

Brittany:

Other Goals To Have:
- Cold sheeping (no buying yarn and/or fiber for a predetermined amount of time)
- Knit from your library
- Knit from your oldest stash (first in, first out)
- Knit for charity
- Finish Christmas knitting early
- Catalogue for Ravelry (makes it easier to queue, knit, and to destash)
- Self-imposed clubs (sweater, socks, hats, etc.)

SAFF Special Episode!

Hey y’all! Today’s episode is our special SAFF recap. We talk about what we did, some of the people we met, our first meetup, and of course- what we bought!

We’re really excited to be doing a surprise giveaway for this episode! The kind gals at The Unique Sheep gave us a set of their gradient sock yarn to give away.

We want to know what specific pattern you would make if you won this beautiful set of 25% tussah silk, 75% superwash merino yarn.  Please leave a comment on the SAFF special episode thread on the Ravelry group, and you’ll be entered into the random number generator. This contest closes at midnight (Central Time), November 15.

**Please Note:** We will no longer be accepting blog comments for contest entries.  If you would like to enter a contest, please leave a comment on the appropriate Ravelry thread.  It just got too complicated to keep up with both, and since 99% of our listeners are already on Ravelry, it just made sense for us to only accept entries using that method.  We’re sorry if this is an inconvenience for anyone, but we have to do what’s best for us to keep the podcast (and all of the mountains of administrative duties it produces) as streamlined as possible.  Thank you for your understanding!!!

SAFF Recap Notes:

We went with our friends flutterbys (Lori) and crazyangel (Christine), and stayed at the Mountain Inn & Suites in Hendersonville NC (just one exit away from SAFF).

Dana’s Classes:

Dana took a class with Esther Rogers aka JazzTurtle (WildCarding) on Friday.  She learned how to make funky and chunky art batts using her own Fancy Kitty Kitten carder.  Esther recommends anyone who is looking for a carder to take a class on drumcarding before you buy, so that you can try different types and see what kinds of carders are right for different applications.  The most basic carder anyone could go for is the medium cloth carder, 72tpi (teeth per inch).  If you get the opportunity to take a class from Esther, please do so!  She’s one of the most amazing teachers Dana has ever had.

Dana and Lori took a class with Susan Stevens aka Fleegle on Saturday (Supported Spindling). Fleegle’s technique allows the spinner to get both hands off of the spindle, so you can use long draw, short draw, or any combination- whatever you like!  It was a very interesting class, and both Lori and Dana highly recommend taking it if you’re interested in supported spindling (especially production supported spindling!).

The SAFF Party:

We had a great time, although the crowd was so large and so loud that it was quite overwhelming at times.  There were tons of door prizes (we lost count at 50).  We had an opportunity to spin, chat, and catch up with old friends.  We met a few listeners who had come to the party, and really enjoyed talking to them.  Brittany also taught Christine how to spin!  We got to see an electric spinner by Heavenly Handspinning, which was very intriguing (10oz bobbin!!).

The Meetup!

We were so very appreciative of all of you that came out to meet us at the Fibro Fibers booth!  It really warms our hearts to know that you enjoy the podcast and would take the time to come introduce yourselves to us.  We hope you enjoy your JOMR buttons, and come back and see us next year at SAFF! :)  Also, we really want to publicly thank jenhintz and her wonderful mother 3hints for hosting our meetup!  They were incredibly sweet and gracious to us, and we enjoyed spending time with them so much. :)

We had the chance to meet Cristi Brockway (turtlegirl76) in person and had such a wonderful time talking to her!  She’s the designer of the Breaking Heart Socks pattern that Brittany made earlier this year.  We wanted to remind you that she has given us a coupon code for that pattern, good through the end of this year.  Enter ONEMOREROW in the coupon code box at Ravelry checkout for $1 off! :)

The Dinner:

We went to Tupelo Honey Cafe for dinner on Saturday night, and it was absolutely amazing as always.  We really enjoyed the sweet potato pancake, the cat’s head biscuits, the Charleston chicken sandwich, the sweet potato fries, and the wonderful homestyle mac & cheese.  Everything is organic and cruelty-free, and the food is really healthy.  They have vegan and gluten-free choices too!  If you’re in Asheville visiting, be sure to go there for lunch or dinner!  The Hendersonville Road location takes online reservations.

Episode 22: Scraps!

Thanks for joining us for Episode 22 of Just One More Row!

Hello and welcome to the 22nd episode of Just One More Row!  Today’s episode is brought to you by Unwind Yarn Company.  At Unwind Yarn Company we specialize in beautiful handdyed semisolid and kettle dyed colorways.  We carry a variety of spinning fibers, from beginner-friendly corriedale cross and the luscious tweedy effects of swirl BFL, to the smoothness of Falkland and the poofiness of Polwarth- we’ve got something for everyone!  We specialize in both workhorse and luxurious sock yarns, too.  During the month of October, Just One More Row Podcast listeners save 15% on their purchase by entering JOMR1011 in the coupon code box at checkout.
Unwind Yarn Company yarns are available on Etsy.com and at select local yarn stores.

On the Needles/Bobbins:
Dana: Iced, BFF Socks, Cream & Sugar Cowl, Diagonal Scarf #2, Chris’s Christmas Socks
Brittany: Mom’s Christmas Socks, Candy Striped Raglan

FO’s/Yarns:
Dana: Diagonal Scarf
Brittany: Early Morning Beret
(Here is the link to the Honey Badger video- don’t watch this at work as there is some language in it!)

New in the Queue:
Dana: Ribby Cardi by Bonne Marie Burns ($6 Ravelry download), North Porch Hat by Kim Wagner ($4 Ravelry download)
Brittany: Vignette by Amy Herzog (free Knitty pattern), Tenney Park by Elizabeth Martin (free Knitty Pattern)

Discussion: Knitty Deep Fall 2011
Dana and Brittany both queued Tenney Park and think that it would be great in either handspun or millspun yarn; Dana plans to do the entrelac panel in handspun, and Brittany plans to do it in millspun- it’s a sweateroff!  Also queued by both hosts is the Vignette sweater; red buttons are the perfect accent, and it looks very feminine and elegant.  Dana liked the Flügel sweater, but could never, ever knit it to be cropped like the pattern suggests because of her, um, assets.  Dana likes the Ambroso mittens because they can be worked fingerless as well as mitten-style.  Brittany likes the Auguste sweater but would never make it in bright purple for her husband because he wouldn’t wear it!  Maybe a nice green instead?  Brittany also likes the Spatterdash Wristwarmers; she has a huge button collection and would love to use some on these!  Dana likes the After The Rain mittens but the up-front yarn cost is excessive- 8 skeins of Cascade 220 sport?!  Brittany also loves the Kiwi: he is so cute!  Brittany thinks When Samson Met Lila is a pretty sweater too, but she would have to lengthen it.

If I Was A Rich Girl:
Dana: Freshisle Fibers All You Need Is Love mitten kit ($23) (pattern is available on Ravelry for $3.99)
Brittany: Tattoo-Inspired “Knit” Headband ($23)

Discussion: Time On My Hands eBook ($18 for 9 patterns) by Becky Herrick
Dana and Brittany really loved this book!  The patterns we liked best are: Morningtide (fair isle deliciousness!), Sundial (love the thumb gusset!), Digital Age (Latvian braid is awesome!), and Cookoo Clock (love mittens and that cable is awesome! perfect for handspun!).  Brittany loves the Grandfather Clock gloves pattern, and thinks they’d be great as a basic glove pattern.  The Bewitching Hour gloves are knit in a beautiful purple, and both hosts love the cables, but the cable extending up the middle finger inspired lots of laughter- they’re they perfect bird-flipping gloves!  Brittany likes Tea Time but doesn’t care for bobbles… maybe a YO could be substituted instead?  Cocktail Hour is a bit more costumey than either host can pull off… but the lace pattern is beautiful.  Altogether, both Brittany and Dana would knit enough patterns from this eBook to justify buying it.
And now it’s time for a CONTEST!!!  We have a copy of the Time On My Hands eBook to give away, courtesy of the author!  In order to win this book, either leave a comment on this blog entry or on the Ravelry thread for this episode, and tell us what your favorite pattern is from this book, and why you like it.  We’ll draw from all entries for the first November episode, so you have all month to enter.  Please, please, PLEASE: follow these directions, or we simply can’t enter you to win!  Thanks for understanding!!!

Announcements:

    • Drawing for episode 20’s prize, the skein of yarn from KnittinK: byneedleandthread (we had 62 entrants! thank you!)
    • Public Service Announcement: HUGE price increase on Majacraft wheels per the manufacturer.  Dana is extremely disappointed by this because she thinks that Majacraft has priced themselves completely out of the market.  Dana doesn’t think she’d recommend a Majacraft wheel to a new spinner at these prices, especially since a new spinner might not want to stick with the craft.  We understand that manufacturers need to pay their employees a living wage, but this price increase follows too closely on the heels of the one that just happened in February of this year.  Overall, Dana’s advice is to go ahead and try to get a Majacraft wheel from a dealer that has them in-stock and will sell it to you at the old price.
    • Quickie review of Schacht Sidekick: Dana got a chance to spin on one at Smoky Mountain Spinnery, and she loved it!  It was quiet, smooth, and she was spinning froghair singles with no effort at all.  If you already have a Schacht wheel, you can buy the Sidekick with no flyer/bobbin assembly, and that brings the price down to $665.  If you want to buy it complete, you can get it for $750-785 online.  Overall, Dana recommends it, and has intentions to sell her Little Gem travel wheel and buy a Sidekick instead! :)
    • SAFF is October 21-23 in Asheville NC. Signups for classes are still open if you want to take one- not all of them are full! It’s also a good idea to get yourself on the waiting list for a class; you never know if someone will cancel last-minute!  We are having a meetup, and will post details in the next episode! :)
    • Fiber in the ‘Boro is October 29 in Murfreesboro TN- and Dana is vending! She is sharing a booth with Lori (aka flutterbys on Ravelry), who has a wonderful new Etsy store, Deerfield Creations!  She makes polymer clay stitch markers, WPI gauges, spindles, and lovely spindle bags and learn-to-spin kits!  Dana will be bringing yarn, fiber, and handspun.  We’d love to see you there!!

Episode 16: Every Rose Has Its Thorn

Welcome to Episode 16! In this episode we talk about our recent FO’s, queue management, and review an old classic- Charmed Knits.

On The Needles/Bobbins/Spindles:
Dana: Stripey Tomato, Luna Shawl, London Fog SW BFL from FatCatKnits on Little Gem, my own handdyed mixed BFL on medium Turkish spindle from Threads Thru Time
Brittany: Sock Yarn Blanket, Stone and String Studio Wensleydale Club Fiber in Giles

FOs/Yarns:
Dana: Mom’s Birthday Roses, first beaded yarns! (Crocus Beaded ArtYarn and Kelp Beaded ArtYarn).  Mentions several tips for creating beaded art yarns: use waxed quilting thread (be careful using overlock or weaker sewing thread- it tangles and will break!) and smaller beads because they’re easy to place and don’t change the grist of your yarn as much.
Brittany: Quick Cable Slouch Hat,  Pedestrian Cowl (Dana mentions Natural Resources- a great button source but for some reason they’ve closed their Etsy account…)

New In The Queue:
Dana: a BUNCH of stuff from the First Fall Knitty! Chasing Snakes by Mercè Janer, Inlay by Hunter Hammersen, Leaflet by Cecily Glowik MacDonald, Kuusk by Ashley Knowlton- all free (Dana accidentally said Summer Knitty- sorry!  Didn’t want to cause any confusion!), and likes Double Heelix but wouldn’t make them
Brittany: Paulie by Isabell Kraemer (free)

Discussion: How We Organize Our Queues
Dana: My queue is tagged with what it is, whether it’s paid/free/magazine/book, and sometimes tagged with techniques used if they’re particularly interesting.  I don’t really have my yarn matched up to my queue in Ravelry unless I’m specifically looking for a pattern to use with a particular yarn (like my Malabrigo Rasta, or a special yarn with limited yardage).
Brittany: I use the tabs and tags function to organize my queue.  I tag things that I’ve matched yarn and project together as RTK (ready to knit).  Most of my queue is not paired to yarns in my stash, but I have a general idea of what I want to do with all of my stash yarns.

If I Was A Rich Girl:
Dana: Milky Way batt from KnittyandColor
Brittany: Bee Mice Elf club fiber for June- so jealous!!

Review: Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter by Alison Hansel
Dana: I like a lot of patterns in this book!  The Quidditch Socks are awesome, and I love the House Mittens, the House Sweater, and Ron’s Ragg Raglan Sweater.  I’m not typically a fan of kitschy knits, but I do like the Bookscarves .  I made the Tea Cozy Crown for a friend’s baby out of some scrap wool and it turned out so cute- I can definitely recommend it!  I’m planning to make the Twisted Pumpkin Hat for a friend’s son for fall/winter use this year… it’ll look adorable on him.  The Christmas ornaments (especially the sweaters) are absolutely adorable and I think you could adapt them to any color scheme you could think of.
Brittany: Love the Weasley Sweater, Dobby’s Socks, Ron’s Ragg Raglan

Announcements:

  • Signups for classes for SAFF (Oct 21-23 2011) start on July 1 for members and July 15 for nonmembers.  Classes this year feature amazing teachers, big names including Esther Rogers, Susan “Fleegle” Stevens, Jacey Boggs, & Galina Khmeleva! Also, there’s an awesome party at our hotel (Mountain Inn & Suites in Hendersonville) this year on Friday night at 7pm, and you don’t have to be staying at the hotel to come! :)
  • This month’s donation incentive is a skein of handdyed sock yarn by Dana (her shop is Unwind Yarn Company).  Colorway is called Faded Graffiti and it’s a mix of gray, blue, green, tan, purple, and pink.  Any podcast donation of $5 or more gets you an entry to win this skein of yarn, valued at $20!  Help us get a Snowball microphone for Dana and to use for interviews! :)
