Unwind Yarn Company is going to be at Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival in Townsend TN, April 20-22! Stop by our booth to see beautiful Unwind yarns, gorgeous spinning fibers, and unique yarn bowls! Mention that you’re a Just One More Row listener for a special little something, too! You can visit the shop in the meantime at unwindyarncompany.com

Underway:
Dana: Deco City Shawl (ITW Kal 1), put 2 more rows of mitered squares on her shop swatch sample blanket, Rhinebeck Sweater Weather socks
Jessica: On The Spice Market Shawl, 2AAT Socks For Porter, Friend Socks, Spinning for her #sistersheepspin, Sock Monkey Socks

Concluded:
Dana: Miss Isabel
Jessica: Nothing this time

Incoming!!:
Dana: Lenny by Heidi Atwood Reeves (only available via this Craftsy link now- she is no longer selling her patterns on Ravelry)
Jessica: Sister sheep spin sweater- anybody have any ideas? Dana suggested Homegrown, but she’s open to ideas! She wants to make a DK weight cardigan that works well with handspun.

Sew You Say:
Dana: made herself a new Sew Together bag to hold her Color Street stock! She used some long-hoarded Alison Glass that she’d actually bought specifically for this purpose, and it took her most of yesterday. LOL. (Here is the tutorial that goes along with the pattern.) Also she’s been working on a lot of new booth stock for SMFAF.
Jessica: 5 pairs of Acacia panties, two skirts

Where The Wild Things Are:
Dana: Madelyn had croup but they were still able to celebrate Easter! Also, obsessed with sword fighting.
Jessica: California trip- fun at Disney and with family!

Makers Moment:
Dana: her Costco tomato bit it. Not pleased.
Jessica: Feeling like a sewing fraud because she bought premade skirt fabric!

Review: 51 Yarns To Spin Before You Cast Off by Jacey Boggs Faulkner & Illustrated by Kirsten Slade ($24.00)

  • Really nice paperback- the paper feels like watercolor paper
  • Illustrations are beautiful and inviting
  • From the intro: Your book contains 51 yarns you (and each and every spinner) should spin or attempt to spin in your spinning lifetime. It’s a collection that runs the gamut from standard to what-in-the-world…. Every yarn in your book comes with tips and tricks for spinning, interesting history and trivia, and where you might look to learn.
  • Reading the first chapters of the book is pretty much exactly like the “Drafting: from woolen to worsted” Dana took with Jacey at SSK in 2013; so if you haven’t been able to take the class with Jacey (and getting it on Craftsy isn’t in your budget), this book would be an excellent (and portable!) substitute!

Hear Ye, Hear Ye:

  • Dana is a Color Street independent stylist! If you’re interested in trying a sample, fill out the Google form here. Also you can see all of the current designs and shop right in her store here: Pampered Nails By Dana. She’d also love to book some nail bars, if anyone is interested in earning credits toward half price or free nail polish strips! They would be Facebook/online parties, and you don’t have to do any of the work! She will take care of everything for you and you can just sit back and reap the rewards!
  • Dana and Tiffany are currently working on lining up sponsors for this year’s Into The Wool. If you’re a yarnie, bagmaker, notions maker, or designer, they’d love to have the opportunity to feature your business! Email them at intothewoolfiberretreat@gmail.com and they will give you all of the info!
  • Dana is going to Maryland Sheep and Wool! If you’re going too, PM her! 🙂
  • One last announcement that they forgot: Dana is getting ready to release a brand new colorway series exclusively through a wholesale client, Stitch Supply Company! She has been dyeing 14 new colorways based on Tula Pink’s brand new All Stars fabric collection! Be sure to follow Dana’s business IG (@unwindyarncompany) and Stitch Supply’s IG (@stitchsupplyco) to find out when the series is releasing! Here are some pics of the colorways (6 variegateds and 8 solids):

Episode 155: I’m Only Fooling Myself!

Thank you for joining us for Episode 155 of Just One More Row, hosted by pbjstokes and danaofunwind! This episode is brought to you by Unwind Yarn Company.

fullsizeoutput_bc5

If you haven’t stopped by the Unwind Yarn Company shop yet this year, you really should! There’s a brand new look to the Unwind logo and labels, and new colorways are popping up weekly, including a new “Perfect Blenders” series that will take the guesswork out of matching up skeins to use together in a project. Stop by Unwind and make any purchase of $30 or more in the months of January and February, and get 15% off your in-stock purchase by using code JOMR15! You can find the shop at unwindyarncompany.com.

Underway:
Dana: Sunset Highway, Lisbon, Pot O’ Gold Socks, bought more FlexiFlips from Candra’s Yarn Paradise
Jessica: On The Spice Market Shawl, 2AAT Socks For Porter, Friend Socks, Plying for my #sistersheepspin

Concluded:
Dana: nothing this time
Jessica: nothing

Incoming!!:
Dana: Santa Clara ($7 Ravelry download) by Mara Catherine Bryner- just released!
Jessica: Check out my instagram videos!

Sew You Say:
Dana: Finished the quilting on a baby quilt and am currently working on hand binding. Keeping up with the Quilter’s Planner Block of the Month quilt so far- only 2 months in. 😉 March is my month to be Queen Bee for the #lowkeybee, and I’ve got my block picked: Lone Starburst! Had to piece the back for the Clam Bake Quilt I mentioned last time, so it just needs to be basted and quilted. I might actually do a bit of fancier quilting on this one, and since it’s for me it’s on the back burner a bit.
Jessica: Nothing

Where The Wild Things Are:
Dana: A mouth injury inadvertently led to the funniest thing she’s ever said to me.
Jessica: Cardboard Sledding

Makers Moment:
Dana: I’ve been working on some embroidery pieces including the Love kit from Brynn and Co (came as a kit with a MollieMakes magazine- my favorite crafting magazine!) and this super cute piece from Tamar Nahir Yanai. I have also been doing a little more sashiko embroidery but am not sure if I’m going to use the pillow panels for pillows, or as quilt blocks.
Jessica: Gardening time again. Broccoli, Zucchini, Cukes, Kale and other cruciferous veggies made it through the winter! (and Dana is going to get these raised garden beds for her house! whee!)

Hear Ye, Hear Ye:

  • Thank you so much to the listener who donated to the show! We really appreciate it! We have a donate button to the right if you’d like to send a few dollars our way- we have a bunch of prizes to ship and patterns to purchase this year. We also really appreciate new iTunes reviews!
  • The first ITW KAL starts on March 1, and the theme is “Thank You For Being A Friend!” If you’re an attendee, be sure that you’re checking in at the ITW Ravelry group periodically, as we are also about to start trivia questions in March for extra points-earning opportunities!
  • We are once again doing NICU Noggins as a KAL for the podcast in 2018, to run concurrently with the ITW KAL. All hats will be donated to the TC Thompson Children’s Hospital NICU/Pediatric Oncology Unit in honor of Dana’s daughter and Jessica’s son, who were both patients in the NICU. For full details about how to participate, please check out the thread in the Ravelry group, and PM Dana for her address when you are ready to mail your hats! 🙂

Some of my projects will be the Madewell Cardigan, Turners Falls Cardigan, Breathing Space, Exploration Station, 6 pairs of socks for me and 6 pairs for Porter

Sew You Say:
Dana: Finished a pair of Acacia panties! Made 4 stuffies from Moda panels (cat here and dog here), 2 for Madelyn and 2 for friends’ children.  Working on a Clam Bake Quilt from a Moda Jolly Bar pattern, about to cut out a baby quilt for another friend who is due soon. Dana got hers here. Listen to the episode for our thoughts on the needles!

Where The Wild Things Are:
Dana: Working on getting a soccer team together at Madelyn’s PDO program. Waiting to hear back if the church has approved it or not. We tried “open gym” time at a local gymnastics center and it was dangerous and definitely not for us.
Jessica: Porter finished wrestling season!

Makers Moment:
Dana: How did everyone end up on the #jomrminimalistproject? I ended up losing steam, so I’m continuing into February. Still need to do my bedroom and master closet, and Madelyn’s closet.

Episode 153: New Year, New Plans!

Thank you for joining us for Episode 153 of Just One More Row, hosted by pbjstokes and danaofunwind!

Underway:
Dana: Project Peace 2017, Sunset Highway (steam blocking on the needles using a tailor’s ham), Polygon Blanket
Jessica: 2017 Socks, On The Spice Market Shawl, 2AAT Socks For Porter

Incoming!!:
Dana: focusing on my current projects… not really paying too much attention to my queue as I want to keep momentum!
Jessica: Leave recommendations in the episode thread for handspun sweaters! Finishing ALL 2017 WIPS this month!

Concluded:
Dana: Madelyn Shawl, Gumdrop Buttons Socks
Jessica: Fog Cutter

Sew You Say:
Dana: finished the table runner with the jankety pattern, finished my Morningstar Quilt top and shams (first bed-sized quilt top!) and will be sending those out for longarming this week, made a pillow out of the “orphan block” left over from my Modern Christmas Tree quilt, finished a jelly roll race baby quilt for a friend. Current sewing: not much since my machine is in the shop! I’m learning how to foundation paper piece and it is ADDICTIVE, even if I am having to use my old beginner machine to do it. I’ve mainly been cutting out a zillion new things to work on as soon as I get my machine back!
Jessica: Bag, cleaned up sewing space, new shorts project.

Where The Wild Things Are:
Dana: We had a wonderful Christmas! Check out my personal IG @dana_of_unwind for videos of Madelyn on Christmas morning. Now we are just getting back into the swing of things with PDO.
Jessica: Had a great time in the Caymans! Got to have a relaxing time and do lots of “touristy” things as a family, and Porter lost his first tooth!

Makers Moment:
Dana: How’s everyone’s #jomrminimalistproject going? I’m up to over 200 things so far this month! (if you add up all the days of January it’s 496 things donated/gifted/trashed.) I got some laundry soap stations, which isn’t exactly minimalism but is helping to organize my laundry area. One thing I’ve done knittingwise- completely cleaned out my queue- I’m down to 3 pages and it’s all things I already have yarn allocated for. I saved stuff to favorites if I wanted to remember it. Also: did you guys know that the wishlist feature is now in Favorites? Apparently it moved in November and I missed the announcement. Podcasts I’m excited about: Queens of England Podcast, Lore, Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, Love To Sew, and Tightly Spun– all are new to me (except HP, which I’ve been listening to over a year, and I’m interviewed on an upcoming episode of Tightly Spun!).
Jessica: Meal prep for Keto-diet. Use blue mason jars. Porter’s Worst Chicken Ever (omit the Panko).

6 in 18 Information:
We are planning to do a different format for next year! We hope we’ve covered all of the possible questions here, but if you have more after reading/listening, please send us an email or ask in the thread on Ravelry.

  • We are encouraging folks to do larger projects this year, so each project period will be 2 months long: Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr, May/June, July/Aug, Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec.
  • You must start AND finish your project within that time period- so the 1st of the month through the last day of the second month- and post your FO by the 4th of the following month. (ie: Cast on Jan 1 or later, must finish by Feb 28, and post your FO by March 4)
  • You must use at least 150yds in the project. This can be from multiple skeins, scraps, miniskeins, etc.- but it must be a SINGLE project. (no batches of baby hats, no stacks of washcloths, no knitting several pairs of kids’ socks to count- ONE project.)
  • We want this to be relaxed and easy to keep up with, and we want to encourage you to knit much larger projects than we did in 2017!
  • As with the 2016 and 2017 KALs… if you feel like you need to justify why you think it counts- please just assume it does not count and don’t post it. Please don’t ask us to be the bad guys and police you! Thanks!
  • We will have a single thread open for each project period, and will lock it on the 4th of the month following the close of the project period, so you won’t have to dig through the thread to see all of the posts for the year (and we won’t either).

Hear Ye, Hear Ye:

  • Winner of the NICU Noggins prize never contacted Dana, so victoria, you are the new winner of a project bag from Dana! Send an email and we can discuss fabrics!
  • Episode 151 Giveaway: we still haven’t heard from one winner! Please be sure to check to see if you were one of the winners… if we haven’t heard from you by 12/31, we will have to redraw.
  • To everyone who’s won a bag from Dana, she will get to your bag after the holidays/obligation sewing is done. 🙂
  • Yarn bowls are now in the Unwind Yarn Company shop! $32 plus $7 for priority shipping (all of the yarn you buy will go in the same box, so it will come fast!). Also I’ll be closed for inventory from 1/1- 1/7, and will be returning with a whole new look! Until I close at the end of day on 12/31, use coupon code MOONROOF at checkout for 20% off your entire purchase!

Finished the top on my Modern Christmas Tree quilt and got the back pieced so it’s ready to send to the long armer on Monday!
